I can’t watch this without hearing Dave Thomas (SCTV) doing voiceover. This is totally his schtick.

Original Hits! Original Stars!

If you grew up during the 1970s, you almost certainly remember K-Tel, the relentless marketer of the Miracle Brush, “Hooked on Classics,” and who knows how many other compilation LPs. You may not have realized, though, that K-Tel’s headquarters was in Minneapolis. K-Tel was—and remains—a Minnesota company. Aren’t you proud? This is how Minneapolis Tribune reporter Irv Letofsky described K-Tel in 1973:

Any late night TV watcher knows K-Tel with thundering certainty. The commercials for what has emerged as the bulk of its business—phonograph records—take on all the characteristics of a public mugging, just short of criminal violation.

Truer words were never written. Want proof? Take a look at this compilation of commercials for K-Tel’s compilation records (and a bonus—a classic ad for the wonderfully worthless “Record Selector”) and see if you don’t feel publicly mugged.
